What is the Feynman Technique?
The Feynman Technique is a learning process that focuses on teaching what you learn in the simplest way possible. The idea is simple: “If you can’t explain something in simple terms, you don’t really understand it.” 💡
How to Use the method
This method works because it forces you to break down information into clear, simple language, just like you’re teaching a beginner.
Step 1: Choose a Topic & Study It
- Pick a concept you want to learn (e.g., Photosynthesis, Newton’s Laws, or Enzymes).
- Read about it from your textbooks, notes, or videos.
- Get a basic understanding of how it works.
Example: "I want to understand DNA replication."
Step 2: Explain It in Simple Terms
- Imagine you're teaching the topic to a 5 year old or a friend with no background in the subject.
- Write it down in the simplest language possible avoid fancy scientific terms words.
- If you struggle to explain something, that’s a sign you need to go deeper.
Example:
Instead of: "DNA replication is a semi-conservative process where helicase unwinds the double helix."
Say: "DNA copies itself by unzipping like a jacket and making a new strand for each side."
Step 3: Identify Gaps & Learn Again
- While explaining, you’ll find parts you don’t fully understand.
- Go back to your materials and fill in those gaps.
- Repeat the explanation process until it feels effortless.
Example: "Why does DNA unzip? Oh, I need to understand the role of enzymes better!"
Step 4: Use Analogies & Simplify Further
- Analogies help make difficult concepts easier to remember.
- Compare what you’re learning to something familiar in daily life.
Example:
- DNA Replication Analogy: "Imagine unzipping a jacket and making a copy of each side to create a new one."
- Enzyme Function Analogy: "An enzyme is like a key that only fits into one specific lock (substrate)."
